If you like store bought Oreos then you are going to love these soft homemade Oreo cookies. They are really easy to make. Even if you aren’t a baker…….you can’t go wrong with these.

When I was about ten years old my aunt brought some of these cookies to a family reunion. I have always liked store bought Oreos and when I had these for the first time I was instantly hooked.

How to Make Soft Homemade Oreo Cookies

glass bowl with dry chocolate cake mix, 4 fresh eggs, and some shortening

Begin by preheating your oven to 350°

Add the contents of two Devil’s Food cake mixes to a large mixing bowl. Then, add 4 eggs and 1 1/2 cups of shortening.

Combine these ingredients together. I like to mix these by hand rather than use my stand mixer because the dough becomes very thick.

Once the ingredients are thoroughly combined, use a small cookie dough scoop or just eye-ball it like I do and form some of the dough into a ball. Space each ball of dough on a cookie sheet and lightly press down.

Bake in a 350° oven for 9 – 11 minutes.

Once the cookies are baked remove them from the oven and allow to sit on the baking sheet for one to two minutes before removing to a cooling rack. Cool completely.

Cream Filling

butter and cream cheese frosting

Cream together 1 stick of room temperature butter and 8 oz. of cream cheese. Add two cups of powdered sugar and 1 tsp of vanilla.

Tips

  • Sift the cake mix before adding the eggs and shortening. This will insure your dough is smooth and without lumps
  • If you forget to get your butter and cream cheese out of the fridge in enough time to let it get to room temperature place one at a time on a microwave safe plate. Heat in 10 second intervals and then rotate the butter or cream cheese until it becomes soft but not melted.
